ZINC AND SYNBIOTICS: A RAY OF HOPE FOR ELDERLY HEALTH

As life expectancy increases, the aging population faces challenges related to immune function and digestion. Zinc and synbiotics (a combination of probiotics and prebiotics) are promising nutritional interventions for elderly health. This review examines the effects of zinc, synbiotics, and their combination on immune response, sarcopenia, and fatigue. A review of ten recent studies (2018–2024) indicates that zinc supplementation enhances immune function and reduces inflammation, improving the elderly's quality of life. Synbiotics are effective in improving gut health and restoring microbiota balance, which supports immune function. The combination of zinc and synbiotics shows synergistic effects in boosting overall health, enhancing immune response, and alleviating age-related issues such as sarcopenia and fatigue. However, study limitations such as design and sample size should be considered. Further research with stronger methodologies is needed to validate these findings.
