Potential Laboratory Test Biomarkers in Screening, Diagnosis, and Monitoring of Dengue Fever Patients: A Research Perspective in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia

Background: Dengue fever is at risk of dengue shock syndrome which can cause death if not diagnosed and treated early. In addition to taking anamnesis laboratory tests are needed. Laboratory tests that can be performed include dengue NS1 examination, dengue IgG IgM, total platelet count, and platelet index. This study aims to see the correlation between the results of dengue NS1 and dengue IgG IgM examinations on the results of total platelet count and platelet index (MPV, PDW, P-LCR, and PCT) in patients with dengue fever.
Methods: This study is a correlative research method with an analytic cross sectional approach, which was conducted at the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Hasanuddin University Hospital Makassar on December 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the results of dengue IgG examination to the total count of platelets p=0.032 (p<0.05) and PDW p=0.031 (p<0.05), while there was no significant relationship to the results of PCT examination p=0.788 (p>0.05). For the results of dengue IgM and dengue NS1 examinations respectively there was no significant relationship to the total platelet count p=0.565 p=0.624 (p>0.05), PDW p=0.728 p=0.188 (p>0.05), and PCT p=0.841 p=0.454 (p>0.05). The MPV and P-LCR examination results showed constant results, so statistical tests were not carried out.
Conclusions: It was concluded that the examination of total platelet count and PDW platelet index could be potential laboratory biomarkers for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of dengue infection patients based on dengue IgG test results.
