The Effectiveness of Storytelling Play Therapy in Reducing Anxiety in Preschool Children During Hospitalization at Sumber Hidup Hospital, Ambon

Hospitalization can cause significant anxiety in preschool-aged children because of cognitive and emotional limitations in their understanding of the medical environment. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of storytelling play therapy in reducing anxiety levels in children aged 3–5 years who were hospitalized at Sumber Hidup Hospital Ambon. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test–post-test approach. A total of 38 children were selected through total sampling and received storytelling therapy interventions for five consecutive days over two weeks. The instrument used was the preschool version of the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS), which was completed by parents before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant decrease in average anxiety levels after the intervention. Most children who initially experienced moderate-to-severe anxiety improved to the mild anxiety category. Storytelling therapy has proven effective as a psychosocial intervention that is enjoyable, easy to implement, and developmentally appropriate for children. This intervention supports atraumatic care practices, and can be integrated into pediatric nursing services in local healthcare facilities.
