Abstract

Pulpitis is an inflammation of the dental pulp tissue that often causes pain and is one of the most common dental health problems found in the community. Eugenol is known to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties that have the potential to be used as an initial therapy to reduce pain in pulpitis patients. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using eugenol as an analgesic in reducing pain in pulpitis patients at the Nuhrintama Outpatient Clinic. This study used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The study sample consisted of 34 respondents selected using an accidental sampling technique. Pain levels were measured using the Faces Pain Rating Scale before, after, and 7 days after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed that before eugenol administration, most respondents experienced moderate pain (85.3%), then after eugenol administration, pain decreased with the majority of respondents in the mild pain category (58.8%) and 23.5% did not feel pain. After 7 days, 64.7% of respondents did not feel pain and only 5.9% still experienced moderate pain. The statistical test results showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), which means there was a significant difference between the pain levels before and after eugenol administration. The conclusion of this study is that eugenol is effective as an analgesic in reducing pain in pulpitis patients at the Nuhrintama Pratama Clinic.
